IMBB #25: Strawberry Bruschetta

Filed under: Snacks , Food Porn , Grains , Recipes , Fruit , How To Is my blog burning? is a monthly food blogging event where the host blog chooses a theme and anyone who wants to participate makes a recipe in keeping with that theme or using the theme ingredient. This month's IMBB is being hosted by Derrick, who blogs at  an obsession with food . For the theme, he chose stale bread .  It may first seem like an odd choice for a theme ingredient, but if you have ever bought a loaf of french bread and had it become inedible before you could finish it, you know why it's a good idea to know what you can do with the leftovers. I used mine to make bruschetta with a sweet twist. For my strawberry bruschetta, I toasted 1/2-inch thick slices of whole grain baguettes and topped them with a thin layer of butter. Then, I chopped up some cold strawberries and put them on top. I sprinkled a good amount of sugar on the berries and caramelized it with my small kitchen torch. You can also simply pop the sugared toasts onto a baking sheet and put them under the broiler for a few minutes. I found that I got a better result when my strawberries were cool and dry, which allowed the sugar to harden right away and make a crisp, crackly topping. Serve these right away for brunch or as a midafternoon snack. Permalink     Email this     Linking Blogs     Comments
