Figure-friendly peanut butter snacks

Filed under: Snacks , Nuts/seeds , Lists , Light Food Hungry Girl has a great roundup of some peanut buttery snacks that will still allow you to slip into your swimsuit before heading out to the beach this summer. Peanuts are an excellent source of protein and also contain a good amount of fiber. Unfortunately, peanuts are also quite high in fat and, as a result, high in calories. The serving size for peanut butter is only 2 tablespoons, and it has (approximately) 180 calories and 16 grams of fat. While it is healthy, it can also be hazardous to your diet, especially if you have been known to sneak an extra spoonful or two from the jar. Hungry Girl's picks all have a good peanut butter flavor and nowhere near the fat and calories of the peanut butter alone, so they're a great way to have a snack and get some peanut butter flavored goodness.

Best grapes I've ever had

Filed under: West Coast , Fruit , Raves & Reviews The different varieties of grape are not well known to me, despite having spent significant amounts of time in the California wine country, because the grapes offered in stores are most likely to be tagged as either "red grapes" or "green grapes." Occasionally, there will be a variation, when "black" is thrown into the mix. Why all the vagueness when there hundreds of types of grape grown in the world? Perhaps the stores don't want t set the bar too high. Some grapes are definitely better than others.

How hot dogs got their name

Filed under: Did you know? , Meat Perhaps with an eye towards ballpark munchies and the upcoming grilling season, someone asked Yahoo!  how hot dogs got their name. They directed the questioner over to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council  which has come up with a (semi) definitive answer , since no one really seems to know the exact origin. One thing is clear: it's an American name, even if the sausages themselves were German.

Beans on toast to get even easier

Filed under: New Products , Comfort Food I always considered beans on toast to be an easy, but satisfying meal to make. I mean, you open a tin of beans, warm them up in the microwave (or on the stove , if you want to be fancy) while you toast a slice of bread and then spoon some beans onto the toast. I wasn't one for adding butter to the toast, too, but that is certainly a popular option. The point is that beans on toast is a two-component meal and it looks like two was one too many for Heinz, since they have compacted it into a pre-made frozen food, much like a bean-filled pop tart .  It's currently being tested in New Zealand and, if it enjoys success there, it will be treated to a wider release.

Food Porn: Giant sno ball

Filed under: Snacks , Food Porn , Retro cookery , Super Size Me   Sno Balls are snack cakes made by Hostess. They were introduced in 1947 and consist of a chocolate cupcake filled with creme filling, coated with a marshmallowy fluff and rolled in coconut. When you look closely, you can see that the interior is really  a regular Hostess Ding Dong or cupcake that has been turned upside down. Nevertheless, they have a lot of retro appeal and, like must snack foods, become even more appealing when super-sized. I found this photoset on Flickr when I was looking around for more pimped out snack ideas . The chocolate cake dome was baked in a round bowl , hollowed out and covered with homemade marshmallow . Check out the whole photoset to see all the steps.

Defining a drumstick

Filed under: Snacks , Poultry , Fruit , Did you know? It is safe to say that  when the word "drumstick" is uttered, several things might come to mind. For a musician, that first thing could be the sort of drumstick that is used to, well, play the drums. The more common thought is that of a piece of poultry, also known as the drumstick . This drumstick is the lower part of the leg the fowl. Composed of dark meat, the drumstick is easy to eat with your fingers because of a protruding bone and is quite popular for snacking, as it has a high skin-to-meat ratio.

Fireworks' red and blue popcorn

Filed under: Snacks , Food Porn , Grains , Pop Food , Microwaving , Raves & Reviews A lot of that popcorn   I have eaten in my life has come from microwave bags, and the rest has come from popping corn the old fashioned way: on the stove. To my knowledge, most of the popcorn has been of the hard, yellow-kernel variety. I now think that I was missing out.

Best foods for busy women

Filed under: Lunch , Breakfast , Dinner , Snacks , Dessert , Magazines , Lists Health magazine put together their list of what they considered to be the " best foods for busy women ." What they clearly meant to say was the "best pre-packaged meals/snacks for busy women". There isn't anything necessarily wrong with this sort of meal, but I would hardly go so far as to say it is the "best," since my definition of "best" does not generally include a lot of shelf-stable pre-packaged meals. Nevertheless, here are their picks:
