Middle Eastern tabbouleh is not only one of the healthiest salads around, it hits just the right notes of tart and refreshing with lemon juice and mounds of parsley. Typically made with bulgur and tomatoes, this variation , from Stone Soup , is created with brown rice and a whole cup of almonds, making it substantial enough to be a meal in itself. Cut back on the nuts and it's a colorful side salad to accompany fish or lamb. Become a member of the Slashfood Flickr pool to get a shot of having your photos featured in Feast Your Eyes.
Filed under: Coffee , Features Photo: Corbis It's no secret that what our parents eat influences what we put on our own tables, for better or worse . If you grew up eating only American cheese, for instance, you might not be inclined to reach for Roquefort -- but if you were raised on Camembert, Kraft Singles might hold no special appeal. The same probably goes for coffee -- what we experience as kids surrounded by coffee-drinking adults may color our taste for the stuff as grown-ups. But how hard are those habits to break? Read on after the jump to find out. Continue reading Is Your Caffeine Addiction Your Parents' Fault?
Filed under: Business , Features Photo: New York Naturals Every day we're bombarded with encouragement from nutritionists and health food experts to eat more leafy greens, especially the dark green varieties. Low in calories, high in fiber, packed with vitamin A, blah, blah, blah -- not exactly the kind of stuff you get excited about. But Amy Hamberry may have found a way to change your mind: The Brooklyn, N.Y., mom is selling her own kale chips . The former commercial illustrator and one-time kindergarten teacher stumbled into this new, unexpected profession when she married the owner of a neighborhood health-food store, New York Naturals. The store's California kale chip supplier was always running out of stock (um, who would have guessed there was such high demand?), so Amy decided to start making them herself. It took three months of daily experiments before she was satisfied with the results. "We had to figure out a consistency," Hamberry explained to Slashfood. "It was hard because the kale is different each time we get it. There are a lot of variables involved." Continue reading Eat Your Greens - Kale Chips

Adria denies a report in the New York Times that he was closing El Bulli permanently and replacing it with an academy for advanced culinary study. El Bulli, about two hours north of Barcelona, is considered by many to be the world's best restaurant. However, even for the best, the restaurant business can be tough. The Times reported the restaurant, known for its creative approach to molecular gastronomy with creations like Parmesan ice cream sandwiches, was losing half a million Euros a year. Filed under: Television/Film Photo: TLC We'd like to say that we watch TLC's Ultimate Cake Off for the skill, the artistry, the creativity of cake decoration; for the towering treats that can be fashioned out of fondant, poured sugar and layer upon layer of fluffy sheet cake. And, truth be told, that's a big part of it. But deep down, in a dark corner of our hearts that we hate to acknowledge, we watch in the hopes of seeing one of those majestic creations topple to the ground. Like a Nascar fan who waits through lap after lap of stock car racing for the inevitable crash, we watch nine edited-down hours of baking, icing and figurine creation, only to cross our fingers that one of those mammoth layers will slide out on the floor, crumbling to pieces like so many hopes and dreams. What can we say? When it comes to food TV, we like to see stuff blow up, melt down, crack under pressure. And this week, we got our wish. Sort of. Of the three contestants, two were in need of -- and received -- some destructive comeuppance. Continue reading 'Ultimate Cake Off' - Cracking Up From the Nutcracker Challenge

Photo: Getty Images Nichole McCready a manager at an Outback Steakhouse in Mansfield, Ohio, can handle the many grumblers who complain about bad service and substandard food quality. But what gets her really angry are those patrons who scheme to get free food in ways that may not be illegal, but are certainly manipulative and underhanded. We feel her pain. Who wouldn't want to kick out the obnoxious customers who try to use expired coupons and then scream and yell when told those coupons are no longer valid? "I'm happy to do whatever it takes to make the customers happy, but sometimes it just gets so frustrating when we feel like we're getting taking advantage of," the McCready tells Slashfood. "Our company is so worried about losing customers in this economy that no one will put them in their place and tell them no." Continue reading What Happens When Customer Complaints Are Scams
