Rosemary and Garlic Bread Knots - Feast Your Eyes

Filed under: Feast Your Eyes Photo: Sifu Renka, Flickr This is a great example of how something really simple -- like pizza dough -- can look really unusual, in this case like tiny golden snail shells. These twists of dough are brushed with olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt and chopped rosemary, and make a funky, off-the-beaten-path bread to serve alongside salads or appetizers. Unfortunately, the blogger who shared this photo wasn't too impressed with the version she encountered at a local restaurant. (To use her exact words: "I found myself tugging and gnawing at the bundles . . . like a dog gnawing on a dried pig's ear.") Just another smart idea gone awry in the wrong hands. We still think it's worth experimenting with your own version at home. Become a member of the Slashfood Flickr pool to get a shot of having your photos featured in Feast Your Eyes.

'Ultimate Cake Off' - 'I Am Known for How I Marble My Fondant!'

Filed under: Television/Film Photo: TLC There was a time when we were in awe of the careful art of cake decoration: The sculpting of delicate fondant flowers, the geometric applications of buttercream, the stacking of fluffy sheets of vanilla cake into gravity-defying architectural wonders. But now we're starting to worry. There's a fine line between art and madness, and in 2010, we've crossed over into full-blown obsessive-compulsive pastry disorder. Between the Food Network and TLC, cake mania has reached insane heights -- literally. Like figure skating or Donald Trump's buildings, the bigger and kitschier, the better. A cake isn't a cake unless it spins like a ferris wheel, contains more sugar than a refinery and looks like a teetering game of Jenga on steroids. Don't get us wrong, we love the pyrotechnic hipster creativity of the Charm City staff on Ace of Cakes . And the acquired-taste Cake Boss has its moments of sweet-tooth ingenuity. But the success of these big-city eccentrics is bringing all of the cake crazies out of the woodwork. Continue reading 'Ultimate Cake Off' - 'I Am Known for How I Marble My Fondant!'

'Asian Flavors of Jean-Georges' - Cookbook Spotlight

Filed under: Chefs , Cookbook Spotlight Photo: Amazon.com 'Asian Flavors of Jean-Georges' By Jean-Georges Vongerichten Photographs by Sang An and Daniel Del Vecchio Broadway Books 2007 Buy it on Amazon At age 23, Jean-Georges Vongerichten was sent to Bangkok as the Oriental Hotel's chef de cuisine. Expected to cater to an international clientele using European techniques while making use of the local Aw Taw Kaw's market offerings, he was forced to start from scratch in conceptualizing flavor palates. But like a seasoned painter discovering a whole new color scheme, Vongerichten was dazzled by the potential for one-of-kind nuances and tastes -- and he had a keen knack for creating them, which later made him a pioneer of the fusion cuisine phenomenon. Writes the chef, "One day, I went to the market to buy apples for our signature foie gras dish and there were none. Instead, I bought some ginger and Thai mangoes... I went back to my kitchen and seared a piece of foie gras, caramelized a piece of mango and reduced an intense vegetable broth with some ginger. When I ate this combination, fusion was born for me." See what we tested and whether the book is worth buying after the jump. Continue reading 'Asian Flavors of Jean-Georges' - Cookbook Spotlight
