Vitamin E: Too Much of a Good Thing?

I'll never forget a guest professor of mine in college (circa mid-90's) touting the benefits of Vitamin E. The medical doctor cited vitamin E supplementation as being a near-panacea, and something he had his own mother on. The research of the day actually leant some promise to his enthusiasm, along with its antioxidant counterpart's vitamins C and beta carotene....

Veggie Burrito - Feast Your Eyes

Filed under: Feast Your Eyes , Features Photo: norwhichnuts, flickr Who says vegetarian can't be sexy? The colors alone on this burrito are absolutely mouth-watering. Traditional Mexican ingredients (black beans, chiles, rice) are combined with Caribbean flavors (allspice, mango salsa, plantain) and a few all-American touches (carrot and bell pepper) for a meal that's just as hearty and satisfying as any meat-based version. Want to make it for dinner? Check out the recipe on our Flickr pool. Become a member of the Slashfood Flickr pool to get a shot of having your photos featured in Feast Your Eyes.

January Food Festivals

Photo: Allerina & Glen MacLarty, Flickr . Happy New Year! Buon Natale! Feliz Año Nuevo! A new year means more reasons to party with food, and the weather beckons us to nurture our winter waistline. If you're looking for a reason to party with food, drop in and munch at one of the following. North Illinois Farm Show , Dekalb, Ill., Jan. 6-7: In its 28th year, this convention highlights Illinois farmers at a time when Big Ag and sustainable farming issues are taking a prominent place in the mainstream. Seminars held will discuss the USDA Farm Bill , drainage systems and pesticide licenses -- yes, pesticides. Not your typical food festival -- actually, it's not one -- but a food event more cogent than ever. Big Beers, Belgians and Barleywine Festival , Vail, Colo., Jan. 7-9: Eschew the slopes, or if you must be a ski bunny, reward yourself with a visit to one of the taps at this 10th annual affair, featuring area brewmasters Peter Bouckaert of New Belgium Brewing Co. , and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing Co . If you have the hops for it, enter the homebrew competition. The Winter Wine Festival , New Castle, NH., Jan. 15-Feb. 27: The idea of more than a month of toasting tippling is a fantastic way of coping with the New England winter. Local hotshot chefs, like Gregg Sessler, executive chef/owner of Cava Tapas Restaurant , and national winemakers, like Ted Seghesio, will be given the spotlight. January is the Big "Dieting" Month...

Go into it with your eyes open this year! I know, I know...it happens this time every single year. Everyone, including the media, jumps on the "dieting" bandwagon. This is the time of year when well-intentioned resolutions are made and then broken sometime in February or March. I embrace the desire to "get healthy" and make the extra effort to make healthful lifestyle changes like exercising regularly , eating more fruits and vegetables , cooking healthy meals at home more often, limiting soda and other sweet drinks, etc. But you see, these are lifestyle changes - not temporary fixes. They are quite different from going on a fad diet or joining some type of intense weight loss program that may ultimately make you feel depressed and deprived, embarrassed and irritable, and will inevitably make you feel like a failure. Go into the New Year with your eyes open!

Wendy's Employees Save Customer's Life

Filed under: Fast Food , News Photo: TheTruthAbout..., Flickr . Despite its bad reputation, fast food can actually save your life. Wendy's employees in Middleburg Heights, Ohio, say a man came into the restaurant with his two sons on Dec. 27 and passed out. "I looked down the line this way to make sure everything was okay and I heard a thud," manager John Meade told Cleveland's Fox 8 News . "By the time I turned around, he was on the floor." What Can I Get You Folks?: The Service Game

Filed under: Restaurants Photo: Robert Banh. The fast-casual Italian chain Fazoli's recently staged its fourth annual companywide "Pasta Bowl," a trivia contest in which the savviest employees flaunt their knowledge of how many teaspoons of capers belong on the restaurant's chicken piccata. Fazoli's concept is, admittedly, unique. But restaurant managers have long tried to inspire servers and bump up check averages with a variety of games, most of which are won by whomever sells the most food and drink. The prize - nearly always a bottle of wine left behind by a distributor's rep or a scratch-off instant lotto ticket - goes to the first server to unload a certain number of specials, sell a particular wine or collect a "perfect check" (meaning that guests ordered every course on the menu). I really like games, since they provide a pleasant distraction from the repetitive nature of restaurant work. Other servers must feel likewise, because when managers don't write the rules, we tend to create our own competitions. Continue reading What Can I Get You Folks?: The Service Game

Bacon Bacon Bacon Bacon Bacon

Photo: Dave77459, flickr It's undeniable that there's something about bacon. Some foodies even refer to it as "meat candy," and cooks agree it's a surefire way to improve almost any recipe. Over the last five years, bacon has become smoking hot at restaurants and stores and has found its crispy way into all kinds of surprising dishes. Chef Heston Blumenthal of England's Fat Duck -- regularly cited as one of the world's most interesting restaurants -- often produces bacon and egg ice cream for his tasting menu. Bacon cupcakes surfaced at bakeries across America. More , in Chicago, has a BLT recipe with cornmeal, tomato and plenty of rashers. In some locations of Texas gourmet grocery chainlet Central Market, there's an extensive 15-strong bacon menu, featuring regional specials (Wisconsin, Iowa) or flavor twists (cherry-wood smoked, apple-cinnamon). The new restaurant Permanent Brunch in New York's East Village serves exactly what it says: comfort brunch for lunch and dinner all week long. With that territory comes a menu highlighting an Artisanal Bacon Bar, serving Meacham Ham's Country Bacon from Kentucky and Missouri's sugar-cured Burger's Smokehouse. Speakeasy Big Daddy I.P.A. - Beer of the Week

Filed under: Reviews , Drinks Photo: k [puamelia] , Flickr. While pseudo-speakeasies concocting perfectly calibrated cocktails may be an unstoppable trend, we prefer a different kind of cloak-and-dagger operation: Speakeasy Ales & Lagers , one of the Bay Area's top breweries. Since its 1997 inception, Speakeasy has won suds fans with its full-bodied beers fashioned in steam-fired stainless steel tanks and kettles, then aged in a cool cellar. Though the malty, generously hopped Prohibition Ale and the citrus-wheat White Lightning Wit are winners, we pine for the super-drinkable Big Daddy I.P.A. Ho-hum, you think, yet another bitter India pale ale. But hear us out, for Daddy is not your normal mouth-puckering ale.

Pepsi Unveils New Throwback

Filed under: Reviews , Drinks , News Photo: SAITOR, flickr by Nicki Gostin Old-time soda aficionados and those curious to try something new have reason to celebrate in the New Year. Pepsi will be distributing a limited edition of Throwback Pepsi and Throwback Mountain Dew. The Throwback contains real sugar instead of HFCS. HFCS stands for high fructose corn syrup--used to make all mainstream sodas (and lots of other foods, like ketchup) sweet. For those of us (i.e. nearly everyone) worried about calories, do not fear. Pepsi Throwback has the same amount of calories as regular Pepsi. As BevReview.com notes, this conversion is remarkable news in the soda guzzling world because until now if you wanted a soda made with real cane sugar, you had to buy an import like Mexican Coke or wait until Passover for kosher for Passover Coke or Pepsi.
