U.S. Government Looking to Regulate All Food Sold in Schools

Flickr: baratunde When I was in high school, I thought the vending machines were so cool. They made me feel like an adult. I could grab some food whenever I wanted. No more waiting for lunch period. Awesome! But today, 17% of school kids are obese, triple the rate it was in 1980. So giving teenagers open access to junk...

Does Your Digital Camera Have a 'Food' Setting?

Filed under: Stores & Shopping , New Products , Food News Tomato and Olympus camera. Photo: Emily Farris. These days, food porn seems almost to be giving the old-fashioned kind a run for its money. Everyone with a digital camera and an appetite fancies him or herself an amateur food pornographer, which is to say there's a lot of bad food photography out there alongside the good stuff. Camera companies are catching on to the trend and trying to make a buck, with digital point and shoot models that are manufactured with food photography settings, like this Olympus which has a "cuisine" option, and this Sony , with its "gourmet food" mode. Chances are good that if you purchased a camera recently, it has some kind of food photography option and you don't even know it. If your food photographs are less than porntastic (like the tomato shot here), it might be worth your while to consult your camera's manual or look online to find out. If you don't have a food setting, don't rush right out to buy a new camera that does. One pro shutterbug's opinion, after the jump. Continue reading Does Your Digital Camera Have a 'Food' Setting?

Slow but sure

Simon_D added an entry about lose weight : I have awakened feeling positive about my plan to get back into shape. With a little motivation and perseverance it seems like a perfectly reasonable task, no fad diets or brutal exercise regimes for me. Just simple adherence to the fact that if I move around more and eat less, my goal will inevitably come to its fruition. From now on I will exchange fatty foods for healthier alternatives. I will cut back on the booze, and try to drink as much water as I can.

What I Intend to achieve

tranquil1275 added an entry about lose weight : I lost my first baby prematurely last July and this has left me rather depressed and on top of that I broke up with my boyfriend of after a year. I felt lost and weary … I had gained 20lbs on top of my already heavy weight and was so uncomfortable all the time. I felt tired all the time and the lack of energy didn’t encourage any desire to exercise. I still do miss my boyfriend and wonder why he had to be so mean to me so in order to help me overcome the hurt and pain I started at the beginning of 2009 I started my exercise regime. So far I lost all of the 20lbs and now another 10lbs. I intend to lose at least 60lbs more.

Tennessee Whiskey Renaissance in Making with New Law?

Filed under: Whisky , Southern States , Food News Tennessee whiskey. Photo: Flickr / jpenglert Tennessee whiskey, which has long been the exclusive province of Jack Daniels and George Dickel , may soon be welcoming some new faces to the fold. The Tennessee legislature this month passed a law permitting the distillation of spirits in 44 counties instead of only the three in which it is currently legal. It's a move some legislators say should generate needed tax revenues for the state and new jobs for its residents. Artisan distillers predict the relaxed restrictions could also spur a Tennessee whiskey renaissance. The term "Tennessee whiskey" denotes whiskey filtered through sugar maple charcoal, a step known as the "Lincoln County Process" in honor of the county where Jack Daniel pioneered it. In addition to Lincoln, Moore and Coffee are the other two counties where distillation has long been legal. While the new law allows distillers to produce any sort of legal liquor they choose, Andrew Webber, owner of Kentucky's Corsair Artisan Distillery , suspects many of the dozen or so artisanal spirits makers reportedly eyeing the Volunteer State will experiment with Tennessee whiskey. Moonshine and more after the jump. Continue reading Tennessee Whiskey Renaissance in Making with New Law?
